Riding motorcycles today has never been more fun and exciting.
The geometry, tires, motors and overall feel of today’s bikes are exceptional.
The other big improvement is motorcycle clothing and what to look for and why? Let’s talk about gloves
for this post. There are so many different brands and types, it can be overwhelming for many riders. Here are a few ideas to consider when your looking at gloves to purchase:
a) – What to look for first (fit and feel)
b) – What do you value in a glove the most (protection/quality)
c) – Is a name brand that important?
d) – What do you ride (cruiser/street/track day/race)?
e) – Is price your real reason for purchase?
Motorcycle gloves must fit and feel natural; they should not be too tight, too long or uncomfortable.
If they are then chances are high that you will not wear them. So, make sure they feel right. Also, ask yourself what do you value in a glove? Protection and quality should be at the top of the list as you need glove that not only provide protection from the element, but also will protect your hands when you fall. Look for key features such as Kevlar stitching, top grain or full grain leather, composites on the knuckles and a secure strap so the glove will not be easily pulled off of your hand.
Brand names can be important because many brand are known for their quality. However, always do your homework first. A lot of big name brands on the market are using lower grade materials such as a cheap nylon vs. real Kevlar stitching or goat skin vs. cowhide to lower their costs. We all want a good price on a pair of gloves; however the fact is that gloves are intended to protect your hand and fingers; after all, you can’t replace them. If your hands are badly hurt in a crash due to inferior materials that were used and fail, chances are likely that you’ll have to work very hard in physical
therapy and spend a lot of money to regain normal function of your hand. This is a truth that most riders never really think of, but happens more often than you would like to believe.
The type of riding you do also depends on the gloves you need; riders who ride cruisers do not necessarily need the same gloves that are used by racers. Do your homework as it will pay off.
Also, look for companies who are factory direct or offer discount motorcycle apparel to
save money. There are some really good companies out there who offer great gloves and motorcycle riding gear at a great price.
